               APPRENTICE'S EXAMINATION 

UPSC conducts examination periodically for projected requirement in SCRA. The SCRA examination is the best employment opportunity to join the Indian railway service of mechanical engineer. This is a class I service these officers form a cream of the mechanical wing of the Indian railways.
Eligibility
Nationality:same as for other UPSC recruitment.
Age:17 to 21 yrs as an august of the year.
Education: Pass in 10+2 equivalent in I and II class in maths, as physics and chemistry as optional.
Relaxation in age limit for SC/Sc obc.
Plan for examination:
The examination is conducted in two stages 
I .Written examination(600 marks)
II. interview (200 marks)
Written examination is of objective type with multiple choice answers.

Subjects :Mathematics  ,Marks-200,Hours-2

Paper- I evaluates the applicant proficiency in english and general knowledge and includesthe psychological test. Paper- II tests the applicant knowledge in physics and chemistry.Paper- III is based on maths. The level of knowledge expected for the examination is of the +2/equivalent standard 
Personality test:
Those who have qualified the written examination are eligible to appear for the interview.
the leadership qualities ,intellectual curiosity, social skills, etc are asses in the interview.
Training:
Selected candidate have to undergo 4 yr practical and theoretical training in a railway workshop. The apprenticeship will be extended yearly based on satisfactory reports being received from the authorities. The monthly stipend will be given to the apprentices during the period of apprenticeship. Semester examination are held in which 50% is the qualifying mark in the aggregate. During the period of training ,SCRA's must pass either I&II of the council of the engineering, institutions examination (London) or section A&B of the associate membership of the institutions of the engineers (India) examinations. After 4 yr training successful SCRA's are appointed as probationers in the Indian railway service
of mechanical engineers. Application in the prescribed format must be sent to the secretary ,UPSC, Dholpur house, New Delhi--110 001.
