PARAMILITARY SERVICES

Paramilitary services are the protective services that secures the life
and property of the common citizens of the country. These services ensure maintenance of law and
order and monitor civil discipline during peace. Young people who are on the look out for the
challenging job and have the passion for adventure are ideally suited for the
paramilitary outfit .A deep sense of patriotism, initiative and leadership Qualities are prerequisites for an aspirant
in this field
The organisation:
Six security organizations are considered paramilitary forces.

Assam
rifles: This is the oldest paramilitary force in the country. It was
mobilized in 1835 as cachar levy and was used to protect British settlements
and tea estates in the north east with it's formidable strength of more than 3 score
battalions, this prestigious force guards the Indo-Tibet and the Indo-Myanmar and
conducts counter insurgency operation in the north east or any where there services are recommended.

Border security
force: (BSF)
as created in the December 1965 to protect the nations international border from
insurgents, smugglers. The BSF is assign the role of thwarting trans-border crimes and
other illegal trafficking. The BSF are given intense training to combat in the most
adverse and inhospitable conditions. During war time the BSF are entrusted with the additional task of
protecting vital installation such as airfields and bridges from the enemy
attack. There are three main branches of BSF: General duty
service, Medical service and technical service. The general duty service is the security wing of the BSF.
The medical service branch consist of medical personnel who's task is to fulfill the medical needs
of the BSF out fits. The technical branch is assign the task of marinating
the vehicles ,communication networks ,technical support system,
building etc.

Central reserve police force:
(CRPF) is entrusted with such duties as safeguarding the internal security and preserving the law
and order within the country. In calamities times the CRPF is also deployed on rescue and relief
operations.

Indo
Tibetan border police (ITBP):
The ITBP was mobilized in 1962 immediately after the Chinese aggression.
It was originally organized by the sole intent of securing the indo-Tibetan border against
insurgents. Today the ITBP is entrusted with the additional charge of
protecting the key banks in different states ,securing WIP, conducting Anti-naxalite
operations rescue and relief operation etc. The ITBP specialized unit
trained for unconventional combat, guerilla warfare etc.

Central industrial security
force (CISF)
was organized in 1969 to give security cover to high risk public sector industrial undertaking.
The property and personal of these sensitive industrial installation are protected by the highly
sophisticated security systems mobilsed by the CISF.

National security guards
is a specialise contingency force that specializes in anti terrorist
opreations.
Selection procedure:
There are different level of entry available for qualified aspirants.
Each level require the fulfillment of certain eligibility criteria in terms of
age ,physical standards ,education etc. The aspirant can find entry as
a) constable b) sub-inspector c) commandant
Constable this is a grass root level fore entry to various paramilitary services
Educational Qualification
Matriculation
Age: BSF 18-22 yrs
ITBP/CRPF/CISF 18-23 yrs
Assam rifles 18-25
The selection procedure comprises 4 steps
a) physical efficiency test
b) literacy and intelligence test
c) interview
D) medical examination
The final merit list is drawn only after the whole process of testing
is accomplished.
Physical standards:
CRPF/ITBP: height 162.5 cms.
weight: 45 kgs
chest: 80 cms unexpanded,85 cms expanded (relaxation in condition for St/adivasis/tribesmen)
vision:6/6 in right eye and 6/9 in left eye for right handed individuals
and vice-versa for the left handed individuals.
BSF: height 170 cms.(162.5 cms for st/adivasis)
weight:50 kgs
chest and vision same as for CRPF/ITBP
CISF: height 167 cms(160 cms for hill men
/tribesmen)
weight:48 kgs
chest and vision same as for CRPF/ITBP
Assam rifles: height 154 cms
weight:48 kgs
chest and vision same as for CRPF/ITBP
Candidate should not be victim to deformities of any kind including the flat
foot, bow legs ,varicose veins, knock knees, colour blindness etc. The first round of
scrutiny includes the literacy and intelligence test. After this the candidate are require to prove that the physical
standards meet the requisite norms. The physical measurement test is followed by the ground test
Ground test encompass:
I high jump 4 feet
II long jump 11 feet
II one mile free run to be completed in 6 runs
the ground test are followed by the medical examination. The medically fit are invited for an interview.
with the selection process complete the merit list is announced
*Sub inspectors:
Recruitment to the post of assistant sub inspector (clerk/sub-inspector
(stenographer) is done on the uniform
basis for all the paramilitary services.
Qualification:
age:18-25 yrs
Education:10+2 equivalent,typing(35-40 wpm in english;25-30 wpm in
hindi; or short hand 80 wpm)
selection follows 5 steps which includes :
a. written examination
b. typing and shorthand test.
c. personal interview.
d. physical efficiency test
e. physical measurement
Physical standards:
height 170 cms.(5 cms relaxation for adivasis and hill tribes).
chest 81 cms(86 cms after expansion); for tribles relaxation of 4 cms is allowed(77 to 82 cms)
weight in proportion to height.
for women candidates:
height :157 cms(154-155 cms for tribles and adivasis etc.)
Weight :43 kgs
Eyesight: Near vision (corrected vision)J.1(better eye);J2 (worse eye)
Distant vision: better eye (corrected vision )-6/6 or 6/9.
Candidates with physical debilities like flat foot, bow legs ,knock
knees, squint eyes etc. are automatically disqualified.
Female candidate are usually recruited to the crpf only.
Selection process:
a. Written examination is of two hours duration and carrying a total of 200 marks.
The paper is divided in to four parts, each carrying 50 marks and 50 questions.
The four parts are:
I Hindi/english language
II Numerical ability
III general intelligence
IV clerical aptitude
Those who qualify the written exam are required to qualify the typing/shorthand test after
which they proceed to the second leg of the selection process-The interview
,The interview carries 100 marks. This is preceded by physical measurement test.
Physical efficiency test and vision test.
the physical efficiency test (PET) includes:
I 1 mile run in 6 and half mins.
II 12 ft long jump in three chances.
The pet is conducted in a strictly modified manner for women candidates. candidates who poses the ncc 'b'or 'c'
candidate and those with outstanding sports or athletic certificate have a slight edge over
the others.
Assistant commandant:
At the direct entry level, The top most position is available in paramilitary.
Services in assistant commandant, by joining the class I post ,the candidate can rise in the
hierarchy of the job to he level of DIG or even IG. Thus this entry allows for maximum
upward mobility.

Eyesight norms are listed for sub-inspector posts. Candidates with physical debilities like knock knees,flat foot,colour blindness,squint etc are
Automatically disqualified.
Standards for medical fitness are the same as for the Indian police service (IPS)
,possession of NCC 'b' or 'c' certificates as also possession of outstanding sports or
athletics certificate are the added advantage.
A three tire selection process follows.
a. Written test
b. PET
c. Interview
The written exam consist of two papers.
Paper I 200 marks and paper II 100 marks.
Paper I comprises-general awareness ,general intelligence and
reasoning, numerical ability.
Paper II comprises -essay writing in hindi or english ,precis writing in
english, comprehension in english.
Those who are successful in the written exam. are invited for the pet.The pet includes
For men
I 100 m race to be completed in 16 secs.
II 800m race to be completed in three mins.
III long jump- 3.5 m(three chances)
IV High jump - 1.05 m(three chances)
V shot put-(726 kg)-4.5 m
For women
I 100 m race to be completed in 18 secs.
II 800 m race to be completed in 4 mins.
III long jump 3.0 m(three chances)
IV HIgh jump 0.90 m(3 chances)
Those who qualify for the PET are short listed for the interview. the interview carries 200 marks.

Training:
Selected candidate have to undergo a brief period training before being
allotted their posting. Recruitment is done twice yearly. Advertisement appear in the major national
dailies. Employment
news and rozgar samachar in April-may and September- October.
The examination are held in the following February and August respectively.
There is a sense of national pride and prestige in being the part of paramilitary brigade.

The compensation package is also very encouraging and includes various allowances and perks.
Central government and defence personal are entitled to such as dearness
allowance , house rent allowance, city compensatory allowance etc.
