                   STAFF SELECTION                

                        COMMISSION EXAMINATION 

Staff selection commission (SSC) conducts combine preliminary and main (graduate level) examination for recruitment to the following posts 

A. Assistants grade (group 'B' non gazetted post) for the service like armed forces head quarters (AFHQ) central secretariat service (CSS)railway board secretariat service, grade IV assistant of general  cadre of Indian foreign service and posts in offices like research design and standards organisation central village commission etc (age:20-27 yrs)
B. inspector of central exercise ,income tax, preventive officer in customs, asst. enforcement officers etc. age(18-27 yrs)
C. Sub inspector in the CBI (age :20-27 yrs)
D. sub inspector of police in central police organisation (BSF,CRPF,CISF,ITBP) (male candidates only age:20-25 yrs).
E. Divisional accountants/auditors/junior accountants/UDC's in various central government department (age 18-27 yrs)
Eligibility (common to all posts)
a. Nationality :as per UPSC norms
b. place of service :anywhere in India
c. Age :is specified after each post , relaxation of age for SC/ST ,EX servicemen obc's etc. 
d. Education: degree/equivalent of recognized university (subject of Nepal, Bhutan and Tibet are   not eligible for the grade IV asst. of general. Cadre of IFS(B) and grade II (cypher asst.) of 
cypher cadre of IFS(B).
Selection process: candidates for the main examination are selected through a combined preliminary examination. The main examination is followed by the interview. Physical and medical standards as well as physical fitness test is requisite for certain specified posts. Prelims: objective type ,in multiple choice format set in english or hindi Duration: 2 hours
Part A:100 question of 100 marks on general intelligence and general awareness.
Part B:100 question of 100 marks on arithmetic.
Mains :A: for the post of asst. grade/inspectors central excise/income tax/sub inspectors of cpo's/cbi. The main examination include part I written test part II interview . Part I Written examination: comprises 5 papers of essay type questions -800 marks. Paper I english -100 marks-2 hours. Paper II-language comprehension (english)-100 marks-2 hours-compulsory for all candidates expect for those opting for the post of assistant. Paper III- communication skill and writing ability-200 marks-2 hours-(assesses ability to understand and write in hindi or english); option to answer either in hindi or english. Paper IV-arthmatic-200 marks-3 hours-assesses the proficiency in arithmetic of secondary school level. Paper V general studies-200 marks -3 hours-assesses general awareness, General intelligence and reasoning ability. Part II; interview 100 marks. 
B. Examination for the post divisional accountants/auditors/UDC's.
paper I-2 hours-part A-general english (50 marks) and part B-general studies(50 marks) .Part B may be answered in hindi or english. Medium of writing has to be consistent for prelims and
mains. Paper II-100 marks-2hours-arithmatic(secondry school level) can be answered in english or hindi. For assistant grade and cypher assistant : a pass in the typewriting test is mandatory with the  minimum of 30 words/minute in english and 25 words/minute in hindi. Cypher assistant has to pass the english typewriting test within the probation period. Training for cyber proficiency test for the cypher assistant will be impaired by the ministry of external affairs after selection of the candidate. For the post of inspector of central excise and preventive officer (male and female) and for the post of SI in CBI certain stipulated physical standards and physical efficiency test are conducted before the final interview.
