American
College Test (ACT)
Purpose:
For
seeking admission in various Colleges in the United States and Canada,
by the students they are required to appear in the ACT Assessment
test, which is a multiple-choice test. These tests are offered five
times during the school year: October, December, February, April,
and June. The purpose of this test is to find out strengths and
weakness of the student for studies at College level.
Eligibility:
All
students who are desirous of seeking admission in colleges throughout
the United States and Canada are required to undergo ACT Assessment
test.
Pattern:
The
ACT Assessment comprises a series of tests i.e., Diagnostic, Review
and, Evaluation tests. The Diagnostic test specifies the particular
field of student for further study. Review test determine the area
of concentration of the applicant in particular field to save the
time and energy. The Evaluation test is further two full-length
assessment tests to re-assess and to afford another chance to practice
further and to determine, if there are any additional areas that
need to be studied.
The
ACT Assessment examination is comprises of four subjects: English,
Mathematics, Reading, and Science Reasoning. The English portion
examination will test students understanding of the basics of written
English. It covers punctuation, basic grammar and usage and making
of sentence structure. The test will have five prose passages followed
by about fifteen multiple-choice questions. Total 75 questions are
required to be answered in 45 minutes. Time for answering the question
is about ½ minute per question.
In
Mathematics the students will be tested in pre-algebra, elementary
algebra, intermediate algebra; coordinate geometry, plane geometry,
and some questions on trigonometry. Sixty questions are to be answered
in 60 minutes i.e. about one minute time is available for answering
each question.
Reading
test cover the areas like social studies, prose fiction, humanities,
and natural science. The test includes topics that generally appear
in books and magazines read by high school seniors and college beginner
students. The main stress is given on referring and reasoning. Forty
questions are to be answered in 35 minutes i.e. less than a minute
time is available for answering each question.
The
science-reasoning test covers biology, chemistry, physical science,
and earth and space science. There will be normally one passage
covering each of the four content areas, and each will contain ten
questions, i.e., total forty questions are required to be answered
in 35 minutes.
Chances
to get admission to specific college is subject to performance and
scores obtained in the test.
