Site your career

At crossroads about your career options? Log on to www.studentindia.com. Umesh Kumar Parida in conversation with the Kharghar-based founder of the cost free website

At crossroads over your career options? Your solution could be just a mouse click away. The site www.studentindia.com seems to have all the right options. Kharghar-based resident R K Mahapatra along with 12 others has come out with a cost free website on the lines of a NGO to help the students.

A CA by profession, Mahapatra says, “With 200 career options along with analysis sans any link to the institutions, is the only website in India that was restricted to commercial application. This website was launched in December 2004 after a two- year- long data compilation and development. Unique courses like Bachelors in Gandhian and Ambedkar Thoughts with its employment options are in the website along with the institution / university details. About 16,000 courses offered by 300 universities and 30,000 institutions are displayed on the web.”

Talking to New Bombay Plus, Mahapatra informed, “Global hostel database, placement, examination (including competitive) covering 40,000 cities with colleges, universities etc. and their contact details are placed in the website. The site has part time jobs for freshers and employment opportunities against careers. An analysis of 300 business schools is featured here.” He added, “An expert panel answers relevant questions through email. Helpline is also available for exam stress, frustration, parental pressure and other problems. Psychotherapy in extreme conditions is offered in the website. Our website and work has also been nominated for Manthan Award 2006. The government of Kerala has also expressed interest in the website.”

But that’s not all. “Additional features of the website includes discussion forum with own group, spiritual section devoted for student healing, global courses like Tofel, USML, ACT, GRE, GMAT, SAT with details are available free for accessibility. Health topics, student loan, scholarship (national and international), foreign universities databank, free consultancy etc. are giving wide scope to parents, students besides employers for understanding. Modules like e-commerce application with prospectus of those institutions with less financial strength and quality education are availed of by the students with special arrangements on a cost to cost basis,” quipped Mahapatra while giving a demo to New Bombay Plus.

According to reliable sources, the website has been receiving good response since its inception. “The website appears on top by using keywords - studentindia and student India while searching in Google and other websites. Students also can store their resume free of cost. The rising number of users and visitors in the past three years are the clear signs of success. In future, we will come up with additional features,” informs Mahapatra.
