History |

The state was created under the
Assam reorganization (Meghalaya) Act 1961 and inaugurated in April
2 1970.Its status was that of a state within the state of Assam until January
21,1972 When it became a full-fledge state of union. It consist
of former Garo hills districts and united Khasi and jaintia hills
district of Assam .Cherrapunjee,53 KM from Shillong, is noted for it's
heavy rainfall.
