History

 

Known in the earlier days as Gomanchala ,Gopakapattam, Gopakapuri, Govapuri,Gomantak etc . It abounds in a rich historical heritage. In the first century AD, Goa was the part of the Satvahana empire followed by the kadambas ,the rashtrakutas of malked the chalukyas and the silhars.By the end of the 14th century ,the Khiljis of Delhi annexed Goa to their empire. The discovery of the sea route to India by Vasco-d-Gama in 1948 led to many Portuguese expeditions. The Portuguese made the city of panaji, the capital of Goa in 19843.The Portuguese territory of Goa ,Daman ,Diu was finally liberated in 1961. under the constituent act 1962 Goa was included in the first Schedule to the Constitution As the territory of Indian union. In 1966,Parliament enacted the Goa Daman, Diu Opinion Poll Act ,in accordance with which a poll was held in January 1967 and Goa ,Daman, Diu Voted to continue as the union territory. Goa attended a full statehood on may 30,1987,When Daman ,Deu Retained Separate identity as a union territory. The Goa Government has introduced Konkani as the official language. It is Written in Devanagiri script
