It is believed that Assam is only
the anglicised version of 'Asom' -the name of Ahoms gave to the country
,when they conquered it. During the epic period ,Assam was known as
"Pragjyotisha" Which was later named as "Kamrupa".The
kingdom of kamrupa finds earliest mention in the Allahabad
pillar Inscription of samudragupta. Prior to it's annexation by the British
,Assam was ruled by the Ahom kings for almost six hundred years. it has
a rich and varied legacy of culture and civilisation and the Austric,
Mongolian ,Dravidian and Aryans who came to live there long ago.have
contributed to it's composite culture. The advent of the Ahoms in the
13th century was a major turning point in the history of assam.they
fought the local Moran,Karchari and Chutia kings and inflicted an
ignominious defeat on them. thus in course of time they became a mighty
power in the whole of brahmaputra valley and for the next six
centuries they held their sway over their land.Intrigues and dissensions
in the Ahom court led the Burmese enter through the eastern border and
the over-run the territory.it became the British Protectorate in the
1826, when the Burmese ceded Assam to the British under the Treaty of
Yandabu. The Administration of the territory was then handed over to the
agent of the Governor-General .The British Annexed Cachar to Assam
in 1832 and the Jaintia Hills were part of it in 1835.Assam was annexed
to Bengal 1839. and again it wad detached in 1874 as a separate province
under the administration of the chief commissioner with shillong as it's
Capital It was again united to the eastern districts of bengal
under the partition of bengal 1905 and in 1912 the chief
commissionership of Assam was revived. During partition of India ,Sylhet district of
Assam was merged with east Bengal. NEFA was separate
from Assam in 1948.Dewanagiri in north kamrupa was ceded to Bhutan in
1951.In 1963,Nagaland was Carved out of Assam as a full fledged state.

jan 21,1972,Meghalaya was cut out of Assam, as a separate state and
Mizoram became a union territory in 1987,Mizoram was granted statehood..
